Andrew Monroe (I)
Andrew Monroe emigrated from Scotland to America in 1650. He belonged to an ancient highland clan and was Captain in the service of King Charles I of England. He received his first grant of land June 8, 1650 in Northhumberland County, Virginia, and was later (1652) granted land in Westmoreland County, Virginia. In the time of King Charles II of England he returned to Scotland and induced others of his family to emigrate and another extensive grant of land was made to him by the Crown. In 1659/60 he was a Member of the Westmoreland Commission. In July 1661 he was elected to the Vestry of Appromattox Parish, Westmoreland County. He began to write the name Munroe and it finally attained its present form, Monroe. He married Elizabeth, who is said to be the daughter of Colonel John Alexander, who died in 1677. Andrew Monroe died in Westmoreland County in 1668. His widow Elizabeth Monroe, married a second time before July 30, 1679 George Horner, and a third time before February 23, 1686-7 Edward Mountjoy f Westmoreland County. Andrew Monroe (II)
He was born in Westmoreland County in 1661 and died there leaving a will dated 1714. It appears that he married sometime in 1685 a daughter of Thomas Bowcock, Sr., of Westmoreland County. Andrew and the Miss Bowcock apparently did not have any children. He married a second time to Eleanor Spence, daughter of Lieut. Patrick and Dorcas Spence. Andrew married a third time to Sarah Foxhall, the widow of John Eliott. She was the daughter of John and Mary Foxhall. Andrew and Eleanor had four children, including:

William Monroe
William Monroe, brother of Andrew (II) was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia in 1666, and died leaving a will dated 1737. He married Margaret Bowcock, daughter of Thomas and Jane Bowcock of Westmoreland County, by whom he had four sons and three daughters, including: |
Susannah Monroe
She was born in 1695 and died November 1752, have been married three times: first to William Linton; second to Charles Tyler (sometimes referred to as John); and Captain Benjamin Grayson. Susannah had two sons by Mr. Linton, two sons by Mr. Tyler and four children by Mr. Grayson, including the following son by Charles Tyler:

Andrew Monroe (III)
He was appointed sheriff of Westmoreland County, Virginia in 1731. He married Christian Tyler, widow of Spence Monroe (Spence was his first cousin and the brother of Susannah Monore) who died in 1726. Andrew died in Westmoreland County 1735, and on November 25, 1735, his widow obtained an order to administer his estate. He had at least three children, including:

Captain Charles Tyler
He was from Cameron Parish, Loudoun County, Virginia and married Anne Moore. His estate was appraised April 12, 1768, and the will of his widow, Anne, was dated April 10, 1769, and proved June 13, 1769. Charles and Anne had five sons and two daughters, including:

He resided on Monroe Creek, Westmoreland County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Jones. His will was written in 1774, but there is no date of probate. Spence and Elizabeth had five children including:

He was born December 27, 1747, and married Letty George, August 15, 1774. He died March 1, 1843. William and Letty had five sons and four daughters, including:

President James Monroe, the Fifth President of the United States
President Monroe was born April 28, 1758. He married Elizabeth Kortright, daughter of Lawrence Kortright on February 16, 1786, in New York City. He died in New York City on July 4, 1831 at the home of his daughter, Maria Hester Monroe Gouverneur
